June 30th

Here's what's going on so far this week.

Sandy made it back, jet lagged but OK, last Sunday from India. Her project is progressing along there, she can't take any photos on site so just have to listen to the description and imagine a 26 story mansion.
Yesterday she took another test on her way to getting her own Architectural License. She has a USC Masters Degree in Architectural Lighting Design, but still wants her very own certificate. Sandy also teaches classes at both USC and UCLA in Architecture in addition to all the other things she does.
And she doesn't see how Stacy and I did all we did with work and all when they were all growing up! I don't see how she does it all and still has time to sleep!

Movie Time
Stacy and I have been coming up to Bonners Ferry since 2001 and have lived here full time since 2006. We'd never been to the small movie theater in town. Actually the last time we went to a movie theater was back in 2007 in California when we were back there for Sean's wedding. The next closest theater is the 6 plex in Sandpoint but on line reviews don't give it high praise, so we'd just never gone.
But now there's the new Star Trek and I really wanted to see it NOW. Not wait for the DVD/Blue Ray to come out, in my guess around Thanksgiving time.
Our little theater is only open Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, with only one showing each evening at 7:30. We'd been pretty busy last weekend and just too tired to go, but last night was the last chance so we went.
Hmmmmmmmmm, afterwords I told Stacy, "well,.............. at least we've been there now, and once was enough!"
I can't really say much about the $6.00 each price, which is great considering Sandy says it's $10 to $15 per person to go see a movie in her area. But I can complain about the screen so dark you really couldn't see some of the scenes! I was thinking about how the guy must be getting tired of holding the flashlight through the projector! All the stuff I've seen about the movie shows bright white sets, great special effects, and all kinds of details in the movie. Was that crack across the top of the picture in the lens or on the window in the projection booth? Don't know but it was sure annoying to see throughout the whole movie! That wad of dust in the top right? The Spanish speaking folks that apparently had a friend translate much of the movie for them.
Oh well, I guess you can get the mental image, I should have just waited for the DVD! I'll get it now anyway when it comes out on DVD, just to see the movie!
From 1973 to 1979 movie theaters were the family business, one in Redlands and one in Ontario California. I'll talk about that era soon.

Other notes
Sean is doing good, he's liking being in San Diego with the the girls dressed for the summer out and about. Hope his wife Brandy doesn't catch him checking out the competition! Just kidding, he's not really doing much except work and home. He said they don't have any real plans for the big weekend coming up.

Mike said he and Brenda are biking over to the Crater Lake area of Oregon with his motorcycle group, hope it isn't hot or thunder stormy for them!
We're doing some traveling this 4th also, but that will be next weeks post.
Till then, Tad

2021, the long hot summer of our discontent!

Yes, it was one long HOT summer!  In addition to the record-breaking heat along the coastal ranges in Oregon, Washington, and into Canada, we saw temperatures in this Northern Idaho area I NEVER thought we would see again after moving away from the high desert of Southern California in 2006! The hottest temp was an afternoon high of 112 degrees (44.44 C) on June 30th. But, hot, hot days, too warm evenings, no rain so dusty and dry.  Record heat, the hottest weather ever recorded in Idaho, and, according to the stories, only the beginning of the heat that will probably be the "new normal" from this point on. Seems that the same "high-pressure bubble" that causes the cold and snow of winter weather to almost completely bypass our region of the pacific northwest in winter causes record heat in our same region of the pacific northwest in the summer! Since my last post, mainly, we have just been living and trying to avoid getting Covid. Stacy and I got our vaccinations...

I can't say I'm on a roll just yet, but here's a new post!

So, to continue with last weeks story. In August, Stacy finally got the trailer she's been wanting all along. Yes, while I like the larger, around 28 to 30 foot or so, RVs, Stacy has kept the idea that smaller is better. Smaller can go pretty much anyplace you'd want to camp and our 5th wheel, at 34-feet long, while it can go most places, it can't go 'anyplace' due to the length. When we got the 5th wheel in July 2017, I was surprised Stacy was willing and even suggested, we go for it trading in our 33-foot travel trailer to get the Jayco. Again, the "Wildcat Maxx" was a nice travel trailer. It had made several short and two long trips in the almost two years we'd owned it. We lucked out as in an era of the rapid assembly to make the crazy sales numbers the RV industry has been having, the Wildcat was "completed on a Wednesday by happy Amish at the factory" as we didn't have any of the build issues I still read about from the appar...

Spring, and warmer weather is in the air!

I had started this post on April 15th, now it's the 23rd so this is now history! Warmer temps, for a few days anyway. After the last few weeks of more like winter than spring temps, it is pushing 70-degrees (21.1 C) today! It's been clear, not windy like the last three days, and generally nice weather. We can only hope it will continue to be good weather with it not too dry for the late summer since it has been a dry winter and spring so far. The last time it was particularly dry it was a very bad summer for Hornets. Most places in the region have many of those yellow and greenish hanging hornet traps set all over the place. We do too!  Time to get the traps out, cleaned, and set out for the season. You have to get the traps baited and up soon as with the warm weather the hibernating queens come to and start looking for places to set up new nests. That one year though, hornets were everywhere! The forest was alive with the buzzing of thousands (millions?) of hornets. Dozens ...
