Mission Accomplished

We got back home last night about 5 PM from the six night trip to Eureka and back. 1,914 total miles, about 850 each way and then the driving around in that area.
Unloaded the truck but the rest of the stuff will have to wait until the weekend to start.
It turned out to not be the disaster I'd been dreading. Yes, there was so much stuff!!!. A lot of broken, torn-up or 'lived in' (mice) stuff had to be thrown out, but after two and a half days we had successfully cleaned out the larger of the two units and had the smaller unit 'comfortably' full. On the way home through Oregon we were able to weigh the trailer at a closed highway station, about 5,500 pounds of memories, that for the most part will be sold. Yes there were some things found that got me choked up remembering mom working on them. And I kept some things that meant a lot to me for that reason. It was really sad to me though, mom had gone from the large house to the small apartment living, yet could not bear to downsize the things that she'd collected that had meant so much to her for the twenty years it took her to collect them. And in the end most of her treasures had not been seen by her since they'd been put in the storage in 1997. So all her stuff, all she couldn't sell or give away, became, like I'd said before, her "Spruce Goose". Locked away never to be seen by her again.
While we were there, Chris (brother), figured out that to this month, mom had spent over $20,000 dollars to store her stuff over the years. I know that the unit that had started out at about $80 dollars a month had climbed to $95 a month when we closed it. The next guy or gal renting it will be spending $160 a month!
Chris agreed to continue the smaller storage for the next six months or so to allow both himself and my sister Cam to continue to go through boxes to find mementos to keep as well as separate stuff to ultimately sell things that can sold. Like the entire collection of Life magazines from the first to the last issues until the magazines rebirth as a sometimes publication a few years back. Many, many magazines from the 40's, 50's, and 60's. I remember we'd go with mom while she was scouring the swap meets in the early 70's looking for old books and magazines.
More boxes of books about Russia than I think any family in Russia would have. England, Japan, Europe, South Africa, all places that for one or another reason she'd become interested in and so she'd buy books or magazines and learn all about that place. When we were kids, mom was such a dreamer, she'd had visions of us living in places like Japan or South Africa. How's that for getting away from it all!
In the early 70's she'd met the author Stuart Cloute (not sure of spelling) via mail and corresponded with him for many years until his death. She got and read all his books, and I recall a couple of times when she'd gotten up in the very early morning to call and talk with him in South Africa. I talked with him myself a couple of times but at the early teens age I was then it didn't have the meaning that it did to mom. Anyway, for now the biggest task has been done and hopefully Chris and Cam will be able to sell what they want of all of it.
Sandy and Erik came up on Friday and while we didn't get to visit like we'd have liked to, any visit was better than no visit! They helped quite a bit on Saturday, and we were DONE, the rooms cleaned and the trailer all loaded by 3:30 pm. After a clean up at the motel we were able to go walk on the beach for a while before the arranged family dinner in Erueka. Sandy got to see cousins that she'd not seen since before mom's move to Eureka. I think she liked that since she really likes 'family'. Now if Chris and Cam will only get along!
I took some photos and will add them in a day or two.

Now that the biggest part of gathering mom's things is done, now you two can take your time in going through what you brought home.Thank goodness for memories over the years each thing of mom's will mean more then before and they are good memories..Mom loved gardening seeing things grow in the spring time also having some vegetables in the containers out in the back yard not far from the pool she was a wiz at this and I did learn allot from her also when fall came and she would gather the seeds and put them in baggies labeling each one for the winter she said they needed a rest period before replanting. At different times I would call her on questions about different plants and if she didn't have the answer right then she would call me back she had a collection of books on plants of just about any variety. Her collection of books was awesome so many and so many titles to select from, this was a passion for her it was the best of anything,Ilene could travel the world through her books and never leave the house.. I knew what to get her on different occassions Books this was a big part of her life..I will miss this lady my sister, Ilene, her smile and laugh she had. I recently found some recipes she had made up.She sent me a few of the recipes we had tried the different times I would go down and spemd a few days with her. This chapter is closed but the memories linger on..

It looks like our first non-white Christmas since moving to North Idaho.

As I had said the last post, while winter is here now, it just isn't here ! Two hours north, in the Cranbrook, Canada region, cold and snow. About two-hours east, in the Kalispell, Montana area, winter is there too with cold and snow! This area, more like late fall continued with overcast and cloudy with temps in the low 30s at night and high 30s in the daytime. Maybe some rain in the next day or so or a trace of snow overnight to melt away with the "high" temps for what used to be normal for this time of the year. Last week if the temps had not gone into the 40s with heavy rain by Saturday we would have some snow but the temps and the rain washed it all away. I checked with my records from last year and on December 23rd we had gotten 4-inches of snow. Not much but still a white Christmas. Christmas Day we had heavy snow showers but not much new accumulation. This morning the low was 33 degrees with a high expected to be 36 degrees. Sad face! I like the winters her...

So, Winter Decided It Wasn't Done Quite Yet Around Here!

After last weeks post of me talking about the somewhat short winter so far, it got cold! I mean really cold over the weekend, like two mornings with the lows of +8 (-13C) and +9 (-12C) and 'highs' around 25 (-3C). No one I had talked with thought it would be that THAT cold again this season! Then last night, 02/13/18, there had been a "Winter Storm Watch" issued for the time period of 10 PM Tuesday to 12 noon Wednesday for "up to" 11 inches of snow. Luckily, we didn't get anything near that with about 4 inches overnight and the snow stopped around 10 am and warmed into the mid-30s during the day so what had fallen had begun to melt, clearing off the roads and walkways but staying on the grass. However, for its last blast, we still could get a few more inches of accumulation between now and next Sunday the 18th. Then, the long-term forecast has the daytime temps going back into the mid to upper 30s again in about a week. We'll see! On Monday t...

First posting

Ah the choices of setting this up! It will take a little time to 'fine tune' the page, but its a start. Okay so what have we been doing? Well, two weeks ago now Stacy and I went to visit with Mike and Brenda to see their new home as well as visit with my Father and Mother who were visiting. We had to work around Stacy's days off so it was a three day visit with one day there and two travel days. All the storms flooding and disaster in the Seattle area happened right after we'd left. It was a great visit and we really like the new home. I haven't been able to see any of them since last year so I really liked the visit and getting together again. We got the grand area tour which was nice since I'd never spent any time in that part of the state before. The area is very picturesque. Mike's home is very near the flight paths of the area navy base and that brought back memories of our home in California. The first few years we lived there George A.F.B. was still ...
