Looking back in time

That's what I've been doing the past couple of days.
Last Saturday Stacy and I went through and unloaded all the boxes and items we brought back from Eureka. In the stuff we brought I came across one box with a partial photo album and a box of photos, in another an album that had been put together at some point in time but recent enough to have some good photo quality reproductions of old photos and newspaper articles in it. I scanned just about all the photos in. Still have a few to go and some were just too damaged to scan. In the photos, many I'd never seen, some of me I didn't remember ever seeing, were many that obviously meant something to my mom. I just wish she'd labeled them!!
She had gone back at some point and written names, rough dates, or just a note about the picture. Quite a few were professional photographers shots. In looking at them I'd guess that 'posed' professional pictures were very important in the 1930's and 40's, but even those didn't have any information on them. Only one set had 1937 on it.
I've often looked at photos, these photos, others, other peoples when shown, and sometimes I think it would be so interesting to be able to go back in time to just before or just after the picture was taken. What was really going on, right then. Were they really good times? Did the smiles vanish after the shot was taken? Although I know that in some really old photos the exposure was so long not many people smiled, couldn't 'not move' for that long so I've read! Still, I look and wonder how interesting it could have been to see the story of that photograph!

Today is my and Stacy's anniversary. How she's put up with me all these years is amazing when I think about it. I've put her through some tough times, always unintentionally by the way. I even got really stupid a few years ago, I was just plain STUPID. We worked it all out though and could it be done again there would sure be changes to that script and that year!
But on our passing anniversaries I remember back to that small church in Oregon on that one day. We've seen and done quite a lot over the years. Been so many places. I'm sure she'd never imagined she'd have been putting thousands of miles cross country on a motorcycle with a kid on the back and towing a tent or cargo trailer to boot. I know she'd never even thought she'd ride her own motorcycle! Let alone fly with me in small planes. Back along in those days almost every week in good weather! Tuesday was often flying day. When Sean got older he was often stuck as a reluctant passenger on some of those Tuesdays. When he started kindergarten he had the afternoon class, he was often late and wound up sitting at the 'green' table when we made him late because we didn't get back from flying in time to get him to school on time. He as well as Sandy and Laura were excited with flying for about a half hour back then. Then they usually fell asleep against each other until we landed at where ever we were going sightseeing or for lunch.
So many memories! Luckily Stacy got me a camcorder back just before Thanksgiving 1988 so we have hours and hours of family videos to bring back memories. The hungry to see themselves on TV back then kids now don't remember much or any of the stuff they see, or look at the videos like they're watching a Funniest Home Videos episode.
I've been working at putting them all onto DVD. It's much easier than it used to be with the newer types of DVD recorders there are. I keep telling them they're all going to be surprised one Christmas with a family "Best Of" video set for each of them! After all, I've been working on the DVD transition for a couple of winters now with another winter coming up I might get it done this year!
Well not much new in the rest of the family update. Did get a call from cousin Dan on my birthday last week at a convention in Las Vegas. He never did call back so I'm hoping he's not trapped there! Lost all his money, his cell phone, rolled for his wallet, amnesia from the hit in the head! You just never know!
Could be too many episodes of CSI also!
Type later, Tad. Maybe I'll get Stacy to add her two cents again someday!

2021, the long hot summer of our discontent!

Yes, it was one long HOT summer!  In addition to the record-breaking heat along the coastal ranges in Oregon, Washington, and into Canada, we saw temperatures in this Northern Idaho area I NEVER thought we would see again after moving away from the high desert of Southern California in 2006! The hottest temp was an afternoon high of 112 degrees (44.44 C) on June 30th. But, hot, hot days, too warm evenings, no rain so dusty and dry.  Record heat, the hottest weather ever recorded in Idaho, and, according to the stories, only the beginning of the heat that will probably be the "new normal" from this point on. Seems that the same "high-pressure bubble" that causes the cold and snow of winter weather to almost completely bypass our region of the pacific northwest in winter causes record heat in our same region of the pacific northwest in the summer! Since my last post, mainly, we have just been living and trying to avoid getting Covid. Stacy and I got our vaccinations...

I can't say I'm on a roll just yet, but here's a new post!

So, to continue with last weeks story. In August, Stacy finally got the trailer she's been wanting all along. Yes, while I like the larger, around 28 to 30 foot or so, RVs, Stacy has kept the idea that smaller is better. Smaller can go pretty much anyplace you'd want to camp and our 5th wheel, at 34-feet long, while it can go most places, it can't go 'anyplace' due to the length. When we got the 5th wheel in July 2017, I was surprised Stacy was willing and even suggested, we go for it trading in our 33-foot travel trailer to get the Jayco. Again, the "Wildcat Maxx" was a nice travel trailer. It had made several short and two long trips in the almost two years we'd owned it. We lucked out as in an era of the rapid assembly to make the crazy sales numbers the RV industry has been having, the Wildcat was "completed on a Wednesday by happy Amish at the factory" as we didn't have any of the build issues I still read about from the appar...

Spring, and warmer weather is in the air!

I had started this post on April 15th, now it's the 23rd so this is now history! Warmer temps, for a few days anyway. After the last few weeks of more like winter than spring temps, it is pushing 70-degrees (21.1 C) today! It's been clear, not windy like the last three days, and generally nice weather. We can only hope it will continue to be good weather with it not too dry for the late summer since it has been a dry winter and spring so far. The last time it was particularly dry it was a very bad summer for Hornets. Most places in the region have many of those yellow and greenish hanging hornet traps set all over the place. We do too!  Time to get the traps out, cleaned, and set out for the season. You have to get the traps baited and up soon as with the warm weather the hibernating queens come to and start looking for places to set up new nests. That one year though, hornets were everywhere! The forest was alive with the buzzing of thousands (millions?) of hornets. Dozens ...
