The end of the 'old' Safeway

July 29th was the last day the old Safeway was open. They had a few great sales of some things, like fill up a bag of anything that fits from the produce section for $3.00. So there were a lot of bags going out and the produce section was about empty in less than an hour. Since the new store is already open and just a few miles away most could of the other stock be moved.

These photos were all taken the next day, the 31st. The store was closed and people from the chain's headquarters were there to basically strip away every evidence that it was once a Safeway.

The next photo shows a worker taking down the storefront lettering that has been up for several decades!

The last two photos show the worker taking down the tall lighted store sign. He 'sawzalled' the plastic front to take out the 10 foot florescent bulbs then just cut up chunks small enough to handle and clear it out.

The new owners of this old building from the 1950's will be remodeling inside and according to the local paper, will be opening again as a "Harvest Foods" store in late September or early October. This is supposed to be a small regional independent grocery chain in this part of the North West.
It is kind of interesting actually. Another independent, Boundary Trading Company had been the newest, largest and most modern store in town and the giant chain store Safeway was in an old and very small building and unable to compete with the new markets, even with the chains own weekly adds, with in store deli and coffee sections. Especially for Safeway which in most areas around here are very large and complete 'super' markets. Now the chain store is the biggest and newest store and the independent is in the small old building.
The last photo shows the banner put up a little later telling everybody that couldn't tell the store is closed that the store is closed!
Till next time, Tad

Last August 3rd, the only car dealer in town, Riverside Motors had a fire destroy their offices and showroom. Above was during the fast moving 20 minute fire. Below was taken less than 15 minutes ago and shows their new showroom/offices just about ready to move into. The rubble from the burn down was gone in less than two weeks and crews worked all during the coldest part of winter building this new building. It was moved to the back of the property and cars were moved up to the front. Since the fire the 'offices' were moved out to trailers not visible in the photo but to the left of the new building. Riverside also lost the GM part of the sales and service end of it with the GM restructuring. Too bad for the owners of all the GM cars and trucks in the area, like us, we have to drive to Sandpoint to a dealer there for GM service etc. About 35 miles away now. Riverside is now just a Chrysler/Dodge dealer service location. Pretty building though! Photo below actually occurred ...

"SouthLAnd", the TV show and our experiences.

Just watched the premiere episode of this new show "Southland" during my lunch today on HULU. It premieres on Thursday night at 10 PM on NBC, it's the ER replacement experiment. It was pretty good overall, it tries to be more real and more "COPS" than COPS, but for an overall view of some real life in the big city it works, even if it is a scripted TV show. You can check it right now and watch it on hulu.com About 15 minutes into the show was a realistic call that involved the new rookie officer and his experienced training officer (the actor that plays this guy usually plays hard arsed bad guys), they are responding to a DB which means Dead Body call with dogs in the house. After taking a look they call out Animal Control and after the ACO's come out and get the dogs the police officers go and check inside to find the dead guy and that his dogs, locked up with no way out, had munched on their deceased owner. The sight made the 'rookie' guy sick and...

Life as "retired"

Yes, I am now retired! 5-months ago. It was weird at first; seemed like I was just off work for a few days.  I had to drive to southern California for most of the month of April, which added to that 'on vacation' feel.  The first long trip in over two years. It was something; gas was very expensive but even more so in California!  I was glad to take our Rav4. I had been planning to take our truck. However, just a week before, we'd taken it in to get checked out, which was a major expense and a wait for the parts, so I took the Toyota. It saved a lot of money, although I planned to take the truck and the small trailer for a room instead of moteling it.  With the high cost of ..... everything!, would it have saved as much as I'd hoped? Probably not in reality, but it worked as it did. As the Rav4 is a hybrid, I was able to get an average of 37 mpg, and that was keeping the adaptive cruise control set about 66 to 69 miles per hour which is plenty fast, even with m...
