This Week.........

For me personally, not much going on.
I've just been working on the firewood situation with the weather getting colder. And doing what I can on the weekend days without rain in them. Hope to get a lot more done this weekend since it will be a three day one, and other than cool, highs in the 40's, its supposed to stay dry until next week.
I'd wanted to go flying on Saturday or Monday and get some new aerial pictures with the trees turning fall colors. I had some running around to do on Wednesday while at work so I stopped by to schedule the plane. BIG disappointment! Their ONLY rental is out of service for who knows how long with the entire engine firewall needing to be replaced. They were doing the required annual inspection and found that an unknown renter pilot had hit so hard with the nose wheel on a landing that it pretty well tweaked a good portion of the the lower firewall where the nose gear mounts. It had to have happened in the past 100 hours of service, but whoever landed that hard didn't report the possible damage. And although it apparently didn't change any of the planes handling, its one of those things of once its found, its grounded until fixed.
I was told an, I think, very optimistic two weeks to complete the repairs. This will require pull the engine, the complete instrument panel, the nose wheel and all that goes with that, all the wiring, tubing and sundry connectors, un-rivet the firewall, then install a new firewall and put it all back together! Right now they're just starting but waiting on parts to be shipped. So no flying for a while in any event. But I'd give them about a month for all that. My first job was at the Redlands California airport. I worked there from age 15 to age 22 so I got to see lots of various damaged aircraft and whats involved in repairs!

Stacy is, as I type, out in Iowa with Laura and family. She's enjoying seeing the grand kid as well as Laura. She's also doing something we haven't been able to get Laura to do, taking some video!
She'll be there until the 18th then home. One of their Honda cars had died a month or so back, Laura has some minor experience with working on cars, oil changes, tires, things like that I wanted her and her sister to know. But she was lost with the apparent problems her car was having. Her husband apparently doesn't know anything about cars except how to start one! I'd say I'm shocked, but I actually know that nowadays lots of people are totally clueless when it comes to cars. Nothing like when I was a kid. Since many cars have become very appliance like in reliability, when they break you take them in and get them fixed, then complain about the high cost! Stacy got it fixed though. The problem? It needed a new battery was all!
She's texting and calling so I'll know how its going for her during her visit.
Sandy and Sean have been calling and all seems to be going pretty well for them.

Others in the big family picture aren't doing so well though! Last post I talked about brother Mikes discovery of prostate cancer he's being treated for, and because it was detected so early, he will hopefully be cancer free soon. This week I was called and told that my father is having some heart issues that his pace maker isn't apparently capable of compensating for. His doctors are working to figure out the problem and fix it. And while I was being told about the heart issues, I was told that Mike's wife Brenda had to have emergency surgery for her appendix removal!
I wonder if with all these 'bad' things happening so close together, it would be worth a shot at buying some lottery tickets!
And then my uncle Joe out in Virginia, was to get married today! Except his girl changed her mind about it all just a few days before. Don't know if that will be that or not. But like he said, he still has the unconditional love of his dogs!!
Not much else to say for this installment.
Type to all later, Tad

2021, the long hot summer of our discontent!

Yes, it was one long HOT summer!  In addition to the record-breaking heat along the coastal ranges in Oregon, Washington, and into Canada, we saw temperatures in this Northern Idaho area I NEVER thought we would see again after moving away from the high desert of Southern California in 2006! The hottest temp was an afternoon high of 112 degrees (44.44 C) on June 30th. But, hot, hot days, too warm evenings, no rain so dusty and dry.  Record heat, the hottest weather ever recorded in Idaho, and, according to the stories, only the beginning of the heat that will probably be the "new normal" from this point on. Seems that the same "high-pressure bubble" that causes the cold and snow of winter weather to almost completely bypass our region of the pacific northwest in winter causes record heat in our same region of the pacific northwest in the summer! Since my last post, mainly, we have just been living and trying to avoid getting Covid. Stacy and I got our vaccinations...

I can't say I'm on a roll just yet, but here's a new post!

So, to continue with last weeks story. In August, Stacy finally got the trailer she's been wanting all along. Yes, while I like the larger, around 28 to 30 foot or so, RVs, Stacy has kept the idea that smaller is better. Smaller can go pretty much anyplace you'd want to camp and our 5th wheel, at 34-feet long, while it can go most places, it can't go 'anyplace' due to the length. When we got the 5th wheel in July 2017, I was surprised Stacy was willing and even suggested, we go for it trading in our 33-foot travel trailer to get the Jayco. Again, the "Wildcat Maxx" was a nice travel trailer. It had made several short and two long trips in the almost two years we'd owned it. We lucked out as in an era of the rapid assembly to make the crazy sales numbers the RV industry has been having, the Wildcat was "completed on a Wednesday by happy Amish at the factory" as we didn't have any of the build issues I still read about from the appar...

Spring, and warmer weather is in the air!

I had started this post on April 15th, now it's the 23rd so this is now history! Warmer temps, for a few days anyway. After the last few weeks of more like winter than spring temps, it is pushing 70-degrees (21.1 C) today! It's been clear, not windy like the last three days, and generally nice weather. We can only hope it will continue to be good weather with it not too dry for the late summer since it has been a dry winter and spring so far. The last time it was particularly dry it was a very bad summer for Hornets. Most places in the region have many of those yellow and greenish hanging hornet traps set all over the place. We do too!  Time to get the traps out, cleaned, and set out for the season. You have to get the traps baited and up soon as with the warm weather the hibernating queens come to and start looking for places to set up new nests. That one year though, hornets were everywhere! The forest was alive with the buzzing of thousands (millions?) of hornets. Dozens ...
