Remembering Easters Past

When we got up this morning Stacy and I spent some time recalling some Easter memories.
When I was a kid, a LONG time ago now, I remember that back then Easter was a mini Christmas for my family. We got baskets with candy and had egg hunts. But we also usually got a toy or two with all the Easter goodies.
One stand out memory was the Easter my mom had made large rabbit tracks out of a pattern and talcum powder around the wood floor to try to convince my brother and sister that the actual Easter Bunny had been to the house. I don't recall how old I was but I do recall that I was beyond Easter Bunny belief. But mom had gotten up very early and had taken a lot of effort to pull the rabbit over the other kids that it still stands out to me. The tracks went from place to place and had a basket or prize at each spot. I think as with many "family" holidays as I grew up my mom made them more for her than anyone else. I guess now it was to have something she never could.

Stacy said she remembers Easter Baskets, candy and Easter Egg hunts. She had a rather large family so it was a big day.
With our kids I have video of an egg coloring session when they were all very young. Quite funny to watch as it was at the time too. We didn't have anywhere near the dozens of cooked eggs the kids wished we had so Stacy gave in and let them color raw eggs to make everybody happy. It was candy, baskets, and egg hunts too. And then Stacy always cooked a great Easter dinner. I remember one year, maybe the one I mentioned, that a few of the eggs went missing in hunt to turn up later very smelly!
After we moved to the Phelan area there wasn't too many places to have egg hunts in the desert. So Stacy got really creative and switched the egg hunts to candy eggs and would hide a small bunch around in the house, on shelves and behind things. Candy eggs were smaller and much easier to hide. And if the candy eggs went Missing In the Hunt at least they'd never smell.
Now with all three kids married and on their own they have to come up with their own Easter traditions. Sandy was telling me about the high cost of Hams in Irvine this year. I guess no big sales in California with all the money problems the state's having and high fuel costs.
She did a 10 mile run and spent the afternoon cooking the ham and studying, according to her status update. Sandy is the one most trying to keep the popular traditions going.
Laura called while she was on her way to her local Wal-Mart, then later sent MMS photos of the slice she got on her arm when she got cut by accident. And Sean is still not feeling to great from having a piece of thick wire he was installing as a hinge pin in a cowling that got loose and whipped him in the eye on Friday, cutting his eyelid and giving him a very black eye according to talking to him and seeing the sent by phone MMS text messages.

As for me and Stacy as it was the first day of over 60 degree temps of 2011 we took the opportunity to open up the house a bit. Hooked up a hose reel again and finally washed the winter off some of the vehicles and just enjoyed being outside for a while. It was very nice.
I also figured it finally won't be snowing enough to need it and we took off the snowplow and tire chains from the Polaris quad. It is supposed to rain tomorrow and be colder than normal and stormy the rest of the week. I hope it's not like washing a car to have it rain, will taking the plow off make it snow heavy again?
Hope not but we've had snow on Memorial Day before!

Till next time.

Last August 3rd, the only car dealer in town, Riverside Motors had a fire destroy their offices and showroom. Above was during the fast moving 20 minute fire. Below was taken less than 15 minutes ago and shows their new showroom/offices just about ready to move into. The rubble from the burn down was gone in less than two weeks and crews worked all during the coldest part of winter building this new building. It was moved to the back of the property and cars were moved up to the front. Since the fire the 'offices' were moved out to trailers not visible in the photo but to the left of the new building. Riverside also lost the GM part of the sales and service end of it with the GM restructuring. Too bad for the owners of all the GM cars and trucks in the area, like us, we have to drive to Sandpoint to a dealer there for GM service etc. About 35 miles away now. Riverside is now just a Chrysler/Dodge dealer service location. Pretty building though! Photo below actually occurred ...

I Must Agree, 2020 Is The Year That Isn't.

I know there are many, many people feeling along those lines.  Luckily, our area has yet to experience a large spike. Even in this rural area, the virus has made it here too. As mentioned before, most of the state cases are in the heavily populated south end of the state but there is still a count of over 38,000 positive and 451-deaths in the state.  As of this post, there has been one confirmed death of a 70-year old male, and there are currently 56-cases in this county. The most recent cases are high school sports students as schools opened on September 8th and at the last minute decided to go back to all 'in-person' classes even with all the preparations of having 'hybrid' classes of 2-days a week at school, 2-days a week online, and rotating to keep the student count down to the advised numbers to limit exposure. Our area schools are all on a 4-day week and have been for many years.  However, with those kids, are also over 65 other students who were identified w...

Four photos from the California trip

Heading South on I-15 in Utah. I'd kind of missed these 100 mile views as I saw them again while driving through this and our old high desert areas of California. It was still cool here but I got to our old area as I went through San Bernardino at the height of a heatwave with temps in the 90's! All the traffic and congestion of being back in that area for the first time in over 3 years made me glad it was just a visit! I only wished I hadn't been on such a tight time schedule and had a day free to visit with people I hadn't seen in person in almost 5 years! I was so surprised to see Primm (or Stateline Nevada) so deserted! This photo of Whiskey Pete's all but empty, it used to never be this empty, any day of the week! The Hotel is closed except for weekends anymore, only open for gambling and the McDonald's inside was the only 'restaurant' open! I'd gone there first to get a room on the way down to San Diego. I Guess most people just drive the 40 ...
